Kundupptäckt: Hur du tar reda på vad dina kunder faktiskt behöver

Publicerad 2026-01-15 · 7 min läsning · BY THE LONG WAY

Du tror att du vet vad dina kunder behöver. Det gör du förmodligen inte. Så här tar du reda på det utan att bränna sex månaders kapital.

Most products fail because the people who built them confused "we like this" with "the market wants this". Customer discovery is the discipline that closes that gap.

What customer discovery actually is

Steve Blank coined the term in The Four Steps to the Epiphany — a structured process of getting out of the building, finding people who fit your hypothetical customer profile, and listening hard enough to learn whether the problem you think you're solving is actually a problem they care about.

It is not a focus group. It is not a survey. It is a series of one-on-one conversations where you talk less than you'd think.

Five questions that work

Lean on open questions. Closed questions ("would you pay 30 euros for this?") get you the answer the interviewee thinks you want to hear. Better:

  • "Tell me about the last time you had to do X." (Concrete recent memory; the brain reconstructs the actual experience.)
  • "What was the hardest part of that?" (The pain.)
  • "What did you do about it?" (Existing workaround tells you the size of the problem.)
  • "If you had a magic wand, what would happen instead?" (Solution space — but theirs, not yours.)
  • "Anyone else you know who deals with this? Mind making an introduction?" (Snowball sampling.)

The book that made this concrete for me is Rob Fitzpatrick's The Mom Test. It's three hours of reading and saves you years of building the wrong thing.

Five interviews you can do this week

You don't need a research budget. You need a list of five people who fit your customer profile, an hour each, and a notebook. By interview five you'll have a sense of which problems repeat and which were one-offs. By interview ten you usually know what to build.

This is exactly the job-to-be-done work we recommend before any serious site project. We won't quote a Premium build until we've heard the customer pain in the actual customer's words.

What this has to do with a website

A site built without customer discovery is decoration. The headline is generic. The CTAs ask for things the customer wasn't ready to do. The whole funnel is shaped around what the founder feels good about, not what the customer is hired to do.

A site built with customer discovery often looks simpler — because instead of trying to cover every possible customer concern, it focuses on the three that came up in eight out of ten interviews.

Where to next

If you've never done a customer interview, The Mom Test is the right next click. If you've done some and want to systematise, Steve Blank's Customer Development Manifesto is the canonical text. If you want a gentle introduction grounded in interviewing technique alone, the Indi Young site is a goldmine.

When you're ready to translate what you learned into a website, start with our questionnaire — the first three questions are essentially structured customer discovery for your own business.
