Miksi kilpailijasi Wix-sivu auttaa sinua

Julkaistu 2026-04-26 · 6 min lukuaika · BY THE LONG WAY

Katso toimialasi kolme parasta kilpailijaa. Jos kaksi heistä on Wixissä tai Squarespacessa, sinulla on tilaisuus. Tässä miksi — ja kuinka tartut siihen ilkeilemättä.

This is not a hit piece on Wix. It's a perfectly fine product for some use cases. But for most small businesses competing in a category where the customer is making a quality judgement on first impression — restaurants, salons, contractors, consultants — running on a generic template builder is a real competitive disadvantage. And if your competitor is doing that, that's a real competitive opportunity for you.

What customers see (subliminally)

Most people can't articulate it, but they can recognise a Wix or Squarespace site within a second of arrival. Visual cues:

  • The default font stack.
  • The slightly-off spacing on the hero section.
  • The cookie banner that looks like every other Wix cookie banner.
  • The sluggish load on a phone.

None of these are deal-breakers individually. Together, they communicate "this is a small business that didn't invest in their web presence". That's a fine signal if your business is also tagging itself as scrappy and bootstrap. It's a bad signal if you're trying to charge premium prices.

The technical disadvantages

Beyond the look, several measurable issues:

1. SEO ceiling

Site builders generate templated HTML you can't fully control. The parts you can't control are exactly the parts crawlers care about — heading hierarchy, semantic landmarks, structured data, image responsive sets. We covered this in detail in our SEO strategy resource. The honest version: Wix and Squarespace SEO has improved a lot in recent years, but they still cap out below what a proper Next.js or static site can achieve.

2. Performance

Their templates load multiple JavaScript bundles, often-unused stylesheets, and analytics scripts you can't turn off. Lighthouse scores tend to be 30-50 points lower than equivalent custom builds. Visitors notice — bounce rate scales with load time.

3. Accessibility

A 2022 WebAIM survey of the top million homepages found that template-builder sites had on average 25 % more WCAG failures than hand-built sites. The default themes are often okay, but the moment you start customising, you accumulate accessibility issues quickly. Read our accessibility resource for why this matters legally and commercially.

4. Lock-in

Migrating off these platforms is famously painful. URL structures don't survive. Custom CSS doesn't survive. Photos and copy often need re-entering. The longer they stay, the harder it gets. That's the whole own your platform argument.

How to take advantage gracefully

You don't beat your competitor's Wix site by trash-talking it. You beat it by being noticeably better in ways your customer cares about:

  • **Faster.** If their homepage takes 4 seconds to load and yours takes 1, you've already won the first impression.
  • **Clearer.** A homepage that says exactly what you do, who you do it for, and what to do next will out-convert any beautiful-but-vague landing page.
  • **More trustworthy.** A custom domain, a real SSL cert, a contact page with a real human and a real phone number — basics, but they signal seriousness.
  • **More accessible.** Easier on a phone. Readable for someone with low vision. Switchable between Finnish and Swedish if your customers split that way. See our accessibility resource.

None of this requires being unkind about the competitor. The site speaks for itself.

A worked example

We took on a client whose biggest competitor in the regional market had a Wix site — perfectly nice, two years old, ranking second on Google for the main local search term. After 4 months on a Standard tier build with proper SEO and structured data, our client took the first position. Total spend: less than the competitor would spend on Google Ads in a quarter.

The competitor's site is still up. It's still fine. It's just slightly slower, slightly less accessible, slightly less trusted by Google's ranking algorithm. The accumulated 5 % difference per channel compounded into a 50 % traffic difference within a year.
